Vocational Training Ikirambi trains women in a variety of vocational, income generating and business skills as well as improving literacy in order to make them eligible for employment or capable of running their own enterprises. To break the cycle of poverty and ignorance however, it is important to ensure that the training programme also includes sensitisation in women’s rights; gender-based and domestic violence; sexual and reproductive health; sexually transmitted diseases, their prevention and treatment; HIV/AIDS testing; improved methods of childcare; family nutrition, vaccinations and family planning. This way the women are empowered to take control of all aspects of their lives.
Childcare Ikirambi’s beneficiaries cannot afford state-sponsored childcare and have nobody else to take care of their children; something that could easily exclude them from the support and training Ikirambi wants to provide. Ikirambi’s childcare programme provides a safe and convenient environment for women to leave their children while engaging in our programs. Our daycare will be free for beneficiaries’ children aged 1-5 years and is designed to accommodate 50 children. The daycare programme aims to give children a head start in education, feed them a nutritious meal every day and help improve their health by educating them and their mothers in childcare and sanitation. After the women have graduated from Ikirambi, we will offer them the option of paying a small amount of money to have their children continue at our daycare, thus providing them affordable and safe care for the children while the women are working.
Rabbit Farming Ikirambi’s rabbit farming project is a simple and straightforward way to train women in income generation, to help facilitate their transition into decent and productive lives. Quick to reproduce, easy to care for and in high demand in the local markets, rabbits make an ideal subject for elementary animal farming. Women have received initial training in rabbit husbandry at the Ikirambi centre, as the programme progresses, women will learn how to build their own rabbit houses. Our long term objective is allow the women to start small rabbit farms themselves, which will act as an alternative means of income and assist them in beginning new, productive, and viable careers.
